Get Set Go
We woke up on Saturday. Busy day. Mark brought his bike to the transition zone. Took a tour of key spots around the zones. Slept. We met up with Jeanne McCann who works at Ed Week. A triathlete herself, she was a first time spectator. We had a lovely meal then off to bed. More sleep.
Ah, New York City at 4am. Mark woke up and left for the race. We dragged ourselves to the swim course - walking the mile!!!!! - with the rest of the athletes. Once in place by about 5:50am, we waited for the yellow caps. Mark was in the first of three groups in his age. He dove in after the 55+ category (orange hats).
We heard the start horn, snapped pics and ran back to the swim exit. Yes, that pesky mile again. I missed Mark on the swim bridge by one person. You can see his Tri Twin on the bridge pic. I did get him doing the NFL moves past the orange guys en route to the bike transition.
Leaving so early in the field meant we had a fantastic view of him coming down 72nd street virtually alone. Even so, the red shoes are terrific beacons. The ‘Mile 1’ sign indicates one mile down and five to go once entering Central Park. Next shots are of Mark at the finish line.
Afterwards, Bruce, Jeanne and I went for breakfast. She drove on to D.C. Mark slept. We all took showers. Then went to get the bike, pack it up and head to the train station.
